Robert Fagles' translation is a bit freer than Lattimore's, which again can either be a good or bad thing depending on your needs. High school was a long time ago and I really want to go back and read the Illiad and The Odyssey with my current brain. This was the required translation for a university I wanted to read his translation of the Iliad, too, but it hadn't come out yet. The Iliad - Robert Fagles Robert Fagles. Although it reads much smoother than Lattimore's, this also means that Fagles has to take a bit more poetic license since it's not quite as literal. In the case of both The Iliad, The Odyssey and nearly any other Greek epic, the poetic meter used throughout is called 'dactyllic hexameter'. What translation is the most highly recommended? Here we have Homer's Odyssey as translated by the celebrated Robert Fagles, who died this past March. For those who haven't been keeping score, the late Robert Fagles's translations of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey have been the most popular editions of both since they were published in the 1990s. So with book #2 of my great books list down, I'm looking forward to following the exploits of Odysseus, one of my favorite characters from The Iliad, in The Odyssey, which is also available in a translation by Fagles, yes! Please help Also, should I read the Iliad first? I've heard Fitzgerald, Fagles, and Lattimore mentioned the most, but among the praise I haven't seen much difference between them. There is also an immensely popular translation from the last 10 years ( or so) by Robert Fagles, also published by Penguin.
